Can you build a sustainable side hustle?

Podcast reflections:

It was interesting to hear Emilie's viewpoint on hustle after becoming embroiled in the hustle culture as she became part of the debt-free community while trying to pay off her debts.

As was the case with a few other guests on the podcast, she acknowledges that being part of the hustle was tough, but if she hadn't taken this path, she might not have gotten to where she has today. Her focus now is more on educating and providing sustainable practices to improve your finances!

Emilie started documenting her story about getting rid of her debt a few years ago, and as her account grew, she began to share her top tips for making some extra cash. For a time, she focused on promoting the offers to help her followers make a 'quick buck' but soon realised that wasn't where her real passion was, and instead, she shifted her focus towards financial education for women. You can listen to the podcast in full here.

Here are three key takeaways from the podcast that you should consider before you get started with that side hustle:

  1. Embrace sustainable debt reduction methods - but don't do that until you've got into the habit of paying off debts.

  2. You've got to be honest about how much time you have to create a side hustle. How much are you willing to commit? What will you have to say no to, to say yes to the side-hustle? All things to think about before you jump - but it can be done!

  3. Start by doing some self-reflection. Don't jump in straight away. Understand more about why it is you want to do this. Look at your life and work out where you can put a side hustle around it rather than jumping in and burning out in six months.
